Spiritual Care Department

At Scarborough Health Network, Spiritual and Religious Care (SRC) plays a vital role in helping people to draw upon their own spiritual, religious, cultural and emotional resources for wisdom, guidance, strength and healing as they journey through life stages. SRC delivers care by ensuring safe, non-judgmental, and sacred environments for those who work, volunteer, and receive care in our hospitals. Our Spiritual Care department is affiliated with the Toronto School of Theology, University of Toronto, as a teaching centre for Clinical Spiritual Care. We have been a Spiritual Care training institution for the last 30 years.

The SHN, Spiritual & Religious Care Department features a culturally diverse and multi-faceted team, with staff who meet the national and provincial requirements of Spiritual Care and psychotherapy standards. Spiritual Care Practitioners are trained and certified by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC). They are also licensed members of the Registered College of Psychotherapists of Ontario. The S Department of SRC has a Manager and six full-time and six part-time Spiritual Care Practitioners.  A Roman Catholic Deacon, Community clergy and lay people are involved in the hospital ministry through several programs.  The department is closely linked to the hospital's multicultural and ethical initiatives.

The SRC team provides holistic healthcare management, especially in terms of coping with sudden illness, suffering, and end of life. Their services are available to people of all faith traditions, those with none, and those just searching.

CPE Student Participation

In consultation with the Supervisor, each student chooses a nursing unit to do ministry.  In the evenings and weekends, students can practice throughout the hospital. The full-time summer unit (twelve weeks) from May to July is five days weekly from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The extended CPE program runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Selected evening and weekend shifts are assigned on rotation with fellow students.
